Raffi's Round Up - w/c 4th Nov 2024
The five best Marketing-related nuggets that came across my desk
Welcome to the first edition of my new weekly Round Up!
Here are the five best Marketing-related nuggets that came across my desk:
ONE (if you’re bullish on TikTok, read this one)
Haut Drops is a new TikTok e-tailer aiming to be the “Supreme” of beauty. TikTok E-Commerce has arrived and, as Ochuko Akpovbovbo explained, ”Haut Drops combines entertainment, “drop” culture, and beauty through trend-focused releases on TikTok Shop. To start, they’ve on-boarded four brands—Glow Recipe, Topicals, Caliray, and Moroccanoil—and will deliver monthly limited-edition drops inspired by TikTok beauty trends (think slugging, cherry cola makeup, cortisol face) and broader cultural events like Fashion Week, the Met Gala, and the viral “Bama Rush” season. The first drop, priced at $88, includes a mini-sized bestseller from each debut brand, all in a limited-edition mini yellow backpack.”
TWO (if you’re into business transformation, read this one)
“One of the other things we’re gonna be bringing back is bringing the Sharpies back to our baristas, and it’s going to give them the opportunity to put that additional human touch on every coffee experience as well” - that’s Starbucks’ new CEO talking through his plan to win back the heart and soul of the business, as well as a fair bit of revenue.
THREE (if you’re a start-up person, read this one)
Network effects are real. It took 14 years for Airbnb to get to their first billion guests. Now Brian Chesky revealed how long it took them to get their second billion. Clue: it was a lot less time.
FOUR (if you only read one of these, read this one)
Hubspot’s co-founder solved, in a brilliant piece of content marketing, the riddle of who he sold the Chat.com domain address to. In what reads a bit like the opening gambit of (one of my favourite recent films) Knives Out, Dharmesh writes: “BREAKING NEWS: Secret acquirer of $15+ million domain chat .com revealed and it's exactly who you'd think. For those of you that have been following me for a while, you may recall that I announced earlier this year that I had acquired the domain chat .com for an "8 figure sum" (which was later reported as being $15.5M).”
FIVE (if you’re in a rush, read this one)
And finally… Since every company needs to copy Spotify with their annual “Wrapped” list, a fun breakdown of the most popular items on Deliveroo this year.
